How to play it

↓ is a down-strum, ↑ an up-strum, and a dim tile is a beat you let ring or skip. Count along: the numbers are the beats, “&” is the half beat between them (and “e” and “a” the quick strokes either side of it).

Just starting out? Play steady down-strums on every beat (1, 2, 3, 4) until the chord changes of Give Me Some Sunshine feel comfortable, then add the other strokes.

Worked out from the recording. Down and up strokes cannot be heard, so the usual picture is shown: the hand keeps moving down and up, so strokes on the beat are down-strums and strokes on the “&” up-strums. Lighter and muted strokes may be missing.

About Give Me Some Sunshine

Give Me Some Sunshine is a song from 3 Idiots (2009), Rajkumar Hirani's hit campus film starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. The music was composed by Shantanu Moitra, the lyrics were written by Swanand Kirkire, and the vocals are by rock singer Suraj Jagan and actor Sharman Joshi — Joshi's debut as a singer.

The soundtrack came out on November 27, 2009, a month before the film's release, and went on to become the highest-selling Bollywood album of the year. While Aal Izz Well and Zoobi Doobi were the instant hits, Give Me Some Sunshine became the song students kept coming back to — a soft-rock plea for a little freedom and a second chance at being young, and a staple at hostel jam sessions ever since.

02 · Behind the song

The story behind Give Me Some Sunshine

This was the very first song composed for 3 Idiots — written before the script was even finished. Writers Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi wanted a song that would set the mood of the whole film, and Shantanu Moitra came up with it the way he used to write songs in college: just strumming a guitar. That guitar-first origin is exactly why it sits so naturally under your fingers today.

Moitra wrote the melody with Suraj Jagan's voice in mind, and was so set on him that he said he would change the tune rather than change the singer. Pairing Jagan's raspy rock vocal with Sharman Joshi's untrained, earnest voice gave the track its honest, unpolished feel — it sounds like friends singing in a hostel room, which is exactly what the scene needs.

In the film, the song captures what it feels like to be crushed by marks, ranks and expectations — and simply wish for the chance to live a little before growing up. — The song's theme, in short

It arrives at one of the film's most emotional moments, which is a big reason it has stayed with a generation of students in India. When you play it, keep that in mind: this isn't a party song. It works best gentle, steady and sincere.

Chords used in Give Me Some Sunshine

✓ Only 3 chords · great first song

×321
C
IV · Opens up
x 3 2 0 1 0
Skip the low E string. Keep fingers arched so the open strings ring.

3 2 0 0 0 3
The song's home base. Strum all six strings.

F
♭VII · The twist
1 3 3 2 1 1
Full barre on fret 1 — or use the easy F further down.
Anchor finger trick: Moving between C and F (easy shape), your index finger stays on the 1st fret of the B string and your middle finger stays on the 2nd fret — it just shifts from the D string to the G string. Keep the index finger planted and the change becomes almost effortless.
04 · Progression

Give Me Some Sunshine chord progression

The whole song is built from the same three chords. Verses and chorus use the same set — what changes is how hard you strum and how the vocal rises into the English hook. The chords first appear in this order:

CIV
GI
F♭VII
Versesgentle · light strum

Chorusfuller · the "sunshine" hook

How long you stay on each chord follows the vocal line, so the simplest way to get the timing exactly right is the beat-synced play-along at the top of this page. It highlights each chord at the moment it changes in the recording.

This classic "campfire" strum fits the song's easy 98 BPM groove. Just starting out? Play four steady down-strums per chord (1, 2, 3, 4) until the changes feel comfortable, then switch to the full pattern. Strum lightly in the verses and open up for the chorus.

Jam-session tip

This song is made for groups. One guitar can strum while another picks single notes of each chord — it fills out the sound like the record.

⏱

Keep it steady

The feel is relaxed, not rushed. A steady right hand matters more than a fancy pattern here.

06 · Theory

Why these three chords sound so hopeful

G and C are the two most natural chords in the key of G — home (I) and its warm neighbour (IV). The interesting one is F. It doesn't strictly belong to G major; it's a "flat seven" (♭VII) chord borrowed from the Mixolydian mode. That one borrowed chord is what gives the song its open, folk-rock, slightly wistful sound — a little brighter than sad, a little sadder than happy.

ChordDegree in GWhat it does here
GI (tonic)Home base — where every line wants to return
CIV (subdominant)Warm, open lift away from home
F♭VII (borrowed)The folk-rock "twist" that adds longing and pulls back to G

The same G–F–C family powers a huge number of rock and folk classics, so learning this song also teaches you a sound you'll hear everywhere — and makes many other songs instantly playable.

07 · Beginner friendly

No-barre F: two easy options

F is the only chord that gives beginners trouble. Swap the full barre for one of these — both sound great in this song.

××132
F (easy)
4 strings
x x 3 2 1 1
Index finger flattens over the top two strings only.
××321
Fmaj7
Easiest
x x 3 2 1 0
No barre at all — and it moves straight from C with two fingers.
Why Fmaj7 works: It contains every note of F plus one extra (E) that already sits in the key. It sounds softer and dreamier than F — a great fit for this song's mood, and the change from C is tiny.
08 · Practice plan

How to learn Give Me Some Sunshine step by step

  1. Learn G and C first. These two are the heart of the song. Switch between them until it takes less than a second.
  2. Add F (or Fmaj7). Start with the easy shape and practise C → F → C using the anchor-finger trick.
  3. Drill the full cycle. Play C → G → F with four down-strums each. Don't stop if a chord buzzes — keep the rhythm going.
  4. Add the strumming pattern. Start around 75 BPM with a metronome, then build up to 98 BPM.
  5. Play along with the song. Use the synced play-along above, and sing along — the song is meant to be shared.
